Gregorian-chanting monks anyone? Whilst not the most obvious of samples, the haunting “uh-oh”s make “Banquet”, the best track from “Silent Alarm”, a dark, sinister and menacing dance-fest . Though not entirely clear what frontman Kele Okereke is going on about, or what any of it has to do with a “Banquet”, when he yelps and shrieks with such passion and obvious enjoyment, lyrical content doesn’t really matter. In fact, the culminating cry of “I’m on fire!” is so convincing, it’s almost possible one of his band mates decided to set his dreads alight during recording. Smouldering lead singer aside, this is so 2005 it hurts, even though it was first released in 2004. Bloc Party; ahead of their time.
