Album Review

Various Artists Truck Nine
Truck Records

Article written by Ged M
Jul 2, 2006.

Every year the Truck Festival crew put together a CD of tunes from bands who play the festival and the takings go to the charities supported by Truck Festival. This year the CD has 18 tracks, 14 of which are new or unreleased and five were written especially for the CD.

There’s a bit of everything from post-rock to folk-rock via Pet Show Boys fluffy electronica. Shimura Curves is a band I’m not familiar with but their ‘I Captured The Castle’ is electropop with a girl gang mentality and are definitely worth checking out further. ‘Sixteen’ by ¡Forward Russia! is one of their finest, a boy-girl vocal that explodes volcano-like into six minutes of shrieking, shouty energy while Anat Ben David from Chicks on Speed provides the exclusive electro-rock ‘Boom Boom’. Brakes offer the amazing Neil Young/ Byrds-flavoured ‘You’re So Pretty’ with its barbed lines: “you know I trust you, babe/ don’t fuck me up”. The CD starts and ends with epics: Electric Soft Parade open with the epic guitar instrumental ‘The Friday Before Christmas’ and, with Goldrush, they back Danny George Wilson on his also-epic alt-country ‘The Shadow of the Wolf’. Buy it if nothing else for Piney Gir and the Age of Reason’s ‘Interim’, a cover of a Trademark song, which has a lovely Parisian Left Bank feel and ‘Golden Rules’ by The Research featuring Mi Mye. The latter is glorious droning indiepop, the guitars carefully picking out a melody above the warmly humming keyboards while Russell namechecks Piney Gir and the Schla La Las. If you liked the Research’s album you’ll be gobsmacked when you hear this.
Those two tracks are worth the price of admission alone. But you should buy it because the Truck Festival is a great idea from nice guys who put out good music, because this is a non-sucking festival souvenir and, above all, because the money goes to good causes. This reviewer will be putting his money where his mouth is come Truck Nine…
