Far Cries / Popular Workshop
Split Single
Tigertrap Records
Article

What do we have here? It’s a lovely new split single from Tigertrap Records on the ubiquitous seven inch vinyl format and yes, you guessed it, it’s a limited release. Where would we be without our beloved limited edition vinyl eh?
On the one side we have The Far Cries who have produced a by-numbers electro tinged artrock track with the usual Heart Of Glass off-beat cymbal hits. It’s not totally devoid of charm though as the chorus is mildly infectious but it just lacks ambition to be anything more than a standard artrock track which is inevitably going to lead to this single being left on the shelf gathering dust come 2007.
Well, it would be destined for the shelf had the flipside been anything other than utterly dynamic and mesmerising, which wonderfully it is. Popular Workshop’s Sean is a caustic rock anthem that sits, or rather leaps around, somewhere between Wire and early Nirvana. The song creates a glorious atmosphere that draws you into their sharp and brittle world but there’s also a great pop sensibility to keep you there. If you hadn’t guessed, I like this song a lot.
