65DaysOfStatic
We Were Exploding Anyway Hassle

65DaysOfStatic - 38MinutesInAChickensNightmare?
A few years back I caught this lot live, playing a decent brand of loud/quiet post rock. Not enough to make me look further at the time, but plenty, on the back of a lot of subsequent excellent word of mouth, to pick up their latest from the shelves at Record Collector. I'm glad I did.

Apparently it marks something of a return to a largely electronic approach and it works rather brilliantly. Mostly instrumental, the sounds plug firmly into the Sheffield tradition of earnestly ambitious but listenable electronic dance music, often built around a driving fuzzy guitar. Atmospheric, but pacy and light of touch, sounding alternately like an animated current affairs theme and a soundtrack to a particularly good sci-fi thriller. The only duff points come when the odd vocal creeps in - parts of Come To Me sound like a morngy Robert Smith stuck in a rave (er, possibly because it is Robert Smith, yes really, read your sleeve notes or we cut off your medication - Ed). But that's a small gripe - really its a record full of brightness and energy, as uplifting as it is thoughtful. Another real star in the Sheffield firmament.
