Other People is really very good for the first 52 seconds of its nuclear beat - but then the vocals kick in and the song becomes another alt.rock choogle. The band from Little Rock, Arkansas have sidestepped that Southern boogie beat only to have sucked up the influence of all those alternative bands from Pixies to the Cure to Modest Mouse to Smashing Pumpkins. The result is no-nonsense blue collar rock'n'roll, competent but not very inspiring. They get a little too 80s on ‘Son of California’ when they adopt the terrible white reggaeish beat first abused by the Police, but they redeem themselves in their choruses; they write very satisfying, fist-pumping, melodic and catchy choruses like on ‘Real Love’. Overall this isn't far removed from the generic US indie-rock sound that you can buy by the yard, although any band whose bass players since 2002 have been called John Beachboard, Ryan Universe and Luke Hunsicker deserve a footnote in musical history at least.
