I feel kind of sorry for Anne Bacheley. Her first release, the Mixtape Babies EP, apparently ‘got a great review on SoundsXP’. Well, I’m afraid her luck ran out the moment ‘Headquarters’ dropped through my letterbox, rather than my colleague’s.
I don’t like her music. At all. Why? Well, call me old fashioned, but I tend to prefer vocals and instruments that are in tune with each other, and songs that feel they have some sort of dynamism to them. Unless, of course, there’s a deliberate, artistic reason for the above not to happen. This isn’t the case here. Yes, I know that some find the frailties and other nuances in her music ‘pure’ and ‘joyous’. I don’t.
Song after song of plodding, feyer-than-fey, insipid guitar pop drag by. All topped off with a nasal, sometimes-in-tune-sometimes-out voice that attempts to be sweet and a treat but ends up cloying and annoying. On ‘Energy’, guest vocalist Renaud Sachet gets into the swing of things by partaking in an off-key duet.
Are there any good points?
‘Another Girl’s Planet’ (a paean of sorts to The Only Ones) at least has a jolly enough vocal melody. And ‘New Home Song’ has a decent sound to it. But, overall, clumsy lyrics, lo-fi production and a consistently out of key voice mean there’s little chance of this review being quoted on her next release. Unless she’s a much better editor than she is a singer, anyway.
