Appliance: Re-conditioned

One of the advantages of hearing reissued and rare material is the chance to catch up on what you might previously have missed. I mean, I must have heard Appliance many times on John Peel’s show – you don’t get 4 sessions between 1998 and 2002 without being one of the old boy’s favourites - but they never really registered with me. So here’s 3 CDs – well over 3 hours’ music – by Appliance, consisting of Peel sessions, b-sides and their first three pre-Mute Records EPs. Songs are long but hypnotic, exploring the power of repetition, experimenting with electronica but never letting the mix of guitars and bubbling synths become too rarified or mechanical. I could live without the B sides at least but the EPs disc is full of invention and the Peel sessions tracks are very moreish, especially the rhythmic ‘Fast Music’ from the first session broadcast in October 1998, which eventually became ‘Food Music’ and won a place in the Festive 50 of 1999 (#44). Completists will love the comprehensive release but there’s pleasure to be had with a more selective delving.
