Arch Garrison: King of the Down
Craig and Sharon Fortnam created the North Sea Radio Orchestra to showcase Craig’s more classically-inspired compositions. Their new project Arch Garrison shows off his songwriting skills and his ability as a guitarist, particularly on the nylon-stringed acoustic. Its pastoral themes, referencing the River Thames, Roman roads, and dog walking on the Wiltshire Downs, remind you of Nick Drake but the guitar playing, gentle but firm, bright and melodic, is simply Craig Fortnam (although there is a lovely interlude on 'The Days Don’t Feel The Same’ that would delight Elliott Smith fans). It's vaguely "folk" but doesn't really fit within a particular genre. The songs are sometimes plain guitar and voice, sometimes organ and voices harmonising, and on ‘Thames Fluvius’ there are medieval tones that might be from the realm of Circulus! It doesn't court popularity, though its melodies and arrangements are very accessible, and like certain records and artists (John Fahey, Robbie Basho, even Nick Drake originally), Arch Garrison might become a bit of a cult.
