Awesome Color
Electric Aborigines Ecstatic Peace Records

Article written by Ged M - Jun 9, 2008

A power trio of demented psychonauts from Michigan, Awesome Color hammer the guitar from many different angles: they rehabilitate the primal garage rhythms of the Stooges and Radio Birdman; churn out stoner rock with the evil guitar riffs and pulverising drums of Black Mountain; and dredge up dirty blues a la The Black Keys, all with a punk intensity. It sounds both retro and fresh as a daisy; the whooshing, moaning organ sounds on ‘Come and Dance’ might have sat on Nuggets alongside The Music Machine while the pyrotechnical psychedelia of ‘Do It Right’ could have been written yesterday. The power-metal of ‘Taste It’ sounds a little indulgent but they get things spot on with the tracks that bookend the record: ‘Eyes of Light’ kick things off with a punishing Stooges-like guitar assault while the bluesy rhythms of ‘Evil Rose’ conclude things on a perfect note. 50% inspiration plus 50% perspiration makes for a pretty impressive glance down the time tunnel using a punk rock periscope.
