Backbeats: Lost in Time-More Northern Soul Treasures Harmless

There are probably more northern soul comps on the market these days than hairs on Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's chin so it takes something a bit special to make a mark. The Backbeats series, and this release is one of ten in series 3, definitely hits the target more often than it misses.

The compilers vary from release to release to give each one a different bent, but all fall somewhere within the spectrum of funk and soul from the 60s to 80s. What's particularly good about them is that they somehow manage to guarantee not just quality but also an absurdly low price - around £4 for a physical CD. This one is co-compiled by Kev Roberts (along with Ian Dewhirst), so you know it's a collection of rug cutting, floor talcing, stompers, and a nice mix of the familiar and rarer cuts. And for less than the price of one average release you could buy this and 'Mod Life Crisis', another top selection from the same series.
