Birdengine: The Crooked Mile

Birdengine is the work of one Lawry Joseph Tilbury, whose songs are infested by strange ideas and arrangements. Recorded in Sussex, it’s a weird hybrid of folk and chamber-pop. But the oddest thing about it is Tilbury’s voice, an acquired taste that’s hard to acquire, something of an affectation, and possibly better suited to musical theatre. There are some interesting, intricate songs here: ‘No Arms and No Friends’ has an insistent and addictive rhythm, adorned with tinkles of toy piano, while ‘Phantom Limb’ thrums dramatically with Spanish guitar, and there’s a haunted accordion on ‘Music At Court’. Musically it occasionally resembles Fireworks Night but vocally Tilbury owes more to French chanson, and I could certainly listen to certain tracks again, were it not for that deep, whale-like emoting in his voice that makes this quite hard to bear.
