Shifting back to his Pixies persona has obviously helped Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV continue the focused approach that was evidenced on last year's ‘Bluefinger’ album. Apparently written and recorded in just seven days and inspired by Irish folk-legend of Cuchulainn (who supposedly had seven fingers and toes), the album boasts madball styling fused with catchy melodies that were a staple of the Pixies sound yet more often than not lost or ignored during the solo years. Opener Seus is all atonal guitar and hip-swinging rhythms that lays the blueprint for the rest of the mini-album. Serrated guitars rip through tracks such as Garbage Heap and I Sent Away whilst the title track radiates a moody charm. A definite return to form after the mixed bag offered up on albums by Frank Black and the Catholics.
