Black Helicopter: Don’t Fuck With the Apocalypse
As Sonic Youth become sonic grandparents, what was once “alt.” could now be prefixed “trad.”. Black Helicopter’s third album is fine guitar rock but all its references are backwards, to bands like t’Youth, Mission of Burma and Pavement (including the cover illustration by Raymond Pettibon, who also drew the cover of Sonic Youth’s Goo). Their USP is the way they combine crunchier rock with sweeter pop, going from uncompromising Shellac-style ‘King Shit’ or the martial rhythms of ‘Invasion of Prussia’, about the Red Army’s match into Nazi Germany, straight into the Pavement-esque melodic nostalgic of ‘Golden Days’ (complete with woo-ooh-ooh chorus!). They dredge the nostalgia channels for the turning-40s, which were so recently occupied by The Hold Steady, with the college rock ‘Record Player’: “pull out the old cassette player/ you got some tapes in the drawer”. If 80s-90s guitar rock is your thing, there are fine songs here but they’re trying too hard to offend (with the album title and over-the-top back cover illustration) and to recapture the sounds of their past, to make anything properly satisfying.
