Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears: Tell 'Em What Your Name Is
Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears: Tell 'Em What Your Name Is
This is just 30 minutes long but is packed with 60s-sounding pleading, testifying and downright lecherous garage-soul. Retro it is then, but reproduction it ain’t; it’s done with such Southern style (Joe Lewis is a resident of Austin, TX) and feel for the original sources that if you like the Stax sound, James Brown’s soulful emoting or Oblivians-style garage rock, this will drip like honey in your ears. ‘Gunpowder’ could have Booker T Jones on the grinding organ, the turbo-charged funk of ‘Sugarfoot’ might be voiced by the Godfather of Soul himself, while ‘Big Booty Woman’ is insane call-and-response garage-rock. All the songs are originals, except for the Bar-Kays’ organ-driven ‘Humpin’, but these songs almost demand that you’re vertical and heading for the dancefloor, if not already pulling shapes. The album gets the sound so right that it works on its own terms while tributing the originators – while this doesn’t promise you an ounce of originality, the uninhibited party tunes are a joy to hear.
