Born Ruffians
Red, Yellow & Blue
Warp

Article written by Paul M

Born Ruffians - Red Yellow and Blue
The boys at Warp are no mugs and despite having made their bucks in the bleeps and beeps of electronica they still saw enough potential in Toronto's quirky guitar merchants Born Ruffians to sign them. How right that confidence proved to be. Mixed by Rusty Santos, the genius behind Panda Bear and Animal Collective's albums, Red Yellow & Blue is similarly off-kilter and highly enjoyable. The boys describe their sound as "hootin and a hollerin" and that description is highly apt. The guitars are frequently jagged and the pace variable but it's the yelped vocals with harmonies that make them so distinctive and charming.

Hummingbird is the brilliantly infectious sound of early summer; a clipped punk gem that's on permanent rotation on TV, even making yet another mobile phone ad somehow bearable. The other single present here, I Need A Life, is a marvellous wonky burst of gospel pop but there are other moments such as the title track that are shimmering electro-folk. The latter explains the flag's colours for their land: "red for the blood I'd spill to own it / yellow for the sun which shines my way / & although I'm leader of this country / blue, because I'd still have sad days". Ironically, blue is the last thing you'd ever feel with this clever collection of catchy ditties for company.
