Boy Omega
Hope On The Horizon Stereo Test Kit Records

Article written by Ged M - Nov 16, 2007

Hope On The Horizon marks another stage in Martin Gustafsson’s development as a songwriter: the songs are less electronic and more analogue, warmer and more human-sounding than on previous album ‘The Grey Rainbow’. There’s a Boy Omega Orchestra onboard too, splashing bright colours across his lo-fi palette. The emotional, introspective songs and Gustafsson’s melancholy delivery most remind you of Elliott Smith (‘Pocket Knife’ especially). There are delicate scenarios, from the slow and sparse ‘Hard Work’ to the horns, handclaps and poppy rhythms of ‘Good Enough For You’; then there is to the stark minimalist electronica of ‘True Haven’ that develops in the course of its 8 minute odyssey into a frantic passionate mantra and ends on a full all-horns-blaring flourish. ‘Tonight I’m Swimming’ is dark melodic pop with glorious string arrangements that seems to focus all your attention on the song’s apparently suicidal theme. It’s typical of the record’s melancholy themes – lots of tears, lots of water to drown in, lots of broken hearts – but told in an organic, bittersweet but hopeful way – as the album title suggests - that makes this Boy Omega’s most satisfying record.
