Album Review

Boy Omega
Night Vision Tapete Records

Article written by Ged M - Oct 13, 2012

This is Martin Henrik Hasselgren's sixth album in his Boy Omega guise and it's a slightly heavier take on his angsty, introspective, dolorous pop. There's a lot of Conor Oberst, Elliott Smith and Sparklehorse in the Boy Omega sound generally, especially on the Bright Eyes bright-sounding 'Marching Ants', while the dramatic piano and string arrangements of 'Halos' even conjures the spirit of Arcade Fire. But there's definitely something morose eating away at even the louder songs; the pumped up music in 'New Year's' conceals an anguished voice and the most miserable lyrics: "she hung herself from a Christmas tree/ in the centre of town/ for everyone to see". Introspection and fragility seem to be watchwords of Night Vision; 'Giving Up The Ghost' channels Alex Chilton at his most despairing while the longing and sadness of 'Cannonballs' is painfully expelled in a broken voice. It’s a mixed bag in the end, with attention grabbing tales mixed with some Oberst-style teenage whinging. Choosing life and, dare I say, adding more gallows humour, would make it easier to share the Boy’s night vision.
