Camera Obscura
My Maudlin Career 4AD

Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career
Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career
It's taken four albums and a new label for Glasgow's Camera Obscura to finally deliver the album that they always threatened. At its core My Maudlin Career is a soul album, one driven by the open heartfelt lyrics and yearning vocals of Tracyanne Campbell. It captures a troubled period in her life where she's seen one relationship end and another commence. The outcome is enchanting balladry, often with a doleful country tinge, that gives Campbell the opportunity to sweep us along, wallowing in her tender vocals and gorgeous strings and keys. However what sets it above most is the marvellous balance the album has with the occasional interjections of pure 60s dreamy girl pop, particularly the strident frothy bookends of album starter, single Navy and breezy set finale Honey in the Sun. A brilliant emotionally charged collection, beautifully produced by Swedish vowel magnet Jari Haapalainen, that leaves the listener transfixed, if you buy one album in April make sure it's this lovely gem.
