Charlie Alex March: Home/ Hidden
If there's a hint of the Aphex Twin in this record, it would be Richard James in his most melodic and satisfied state. I'd describe the mix of strings (brilliantly arranged by Sean O'Hagan of the Hugh Llamas), vibraphone and synths as space-classical, with hints of Stereolab and Vaughn Williams in the mix. The effect of these wordless songs is very relaxing: ‘Plan 9’ is is like molten sunlight dissolving in your ears, ‘Mao’ is retro-futurist Tomorrow's World pop and 'Melodie' (the clue's in the title) serves up pretty synth lines with deep-space-transmission bleeps. Sat alongside, but in no way sticking out, are more avant-classical pieces like the lovely piano and tape-hiss study of ‘Telephone Song’. It can only be criticised on length: ‘Clouds Over You Again’ keeps effervescing in the eardrums with its bubbling synths but ends just too early. On the whole, though, this is a gorgeous English pop daydream with the right balance of the programmed and the pastoral.
