Chris Lee
Bury The Kings Vampire Blues

Article written by Ged M - Oct 5, 2012

The second release on Steve Shelley’s new label is not what you’d expect, following the droney psych-rock of Spectre Folk. Chris Lee’s fourth album Bury the Kings is soul-lite, like the Style Council or Sade. If you’re lucky you might hear touches of Allan Toussaint and Memphis Shoals soul and, if unlucky, you’ll hear Jamiroquai and David Gray – ‘Antony Flew’ would be a perfect song to cover for “the twat in the hat”. Lyrically it reaches its nadir on ‘Don’t Go Back Again’ where the singer announces “I’m leaving Babylon” and immediately asks “do you believe in Avalon?” Interest is briefly sparked when limpid electric piano eventually gives way to etiolated electric guitar on ‘Aubade’ but the album as a whole is a hymn to ersatz emotion and plastic soul.
