Crystal Stilts
Alight of Night Slumberland

Crystal Stilts: Alight of Night
Another much-hyped Brooklyn band, but one that lives up to every word of praise. Alight of Night has a great dirtied-down sound borrowing from every decade but sounding fully of the moment: a Velvets-meets-Suicide rumble-rock with a touch of My Bloody Valentine and Link Wray, while Brad Hargett’s vocals are filled with the same toneless despair as Ian Curtis’s. Those reverby guitars and the dense, slaggy sound is inspired; the doomy bass and hypno-grooved percussion of ‘The Dazzled’ could be Iggy’s ‘The Passenger’ on suicide-watch; ‘Crystal Stilts’ is full of rockabilly weirdness and ‘The City in the Sea’ has a soft-edged, opiated bliss. Some tracks from the record are re-recorded from the previous 12” and 7” (the originals now collected on a mini-album available on Woodist, which is another must hear) but they work best in this noise-fogged setting. No doubt about it, this is a brilliant album with an air of well-earned coolness and enough twang and fuzz to satisfy any self-respecting noisehound.
