Future Of The Left
Curses Too Pure

Article written by Neil W - Oct 11, 2007

It was a great pleasure to hear of Future Of The Left’s existence in the world (formed from the remnants of mclusky and Jarcrew) and an even greater pleasure to experience their potent brand of agro-guitar pop over a series of saliva inducing London gigs, including one at Tin Pan Alley Festival which saw singer Andrew Falkous verbally take on London’s non responsive scenesters with the vitriolic charm we so love him for. So, it’s with pure joy to finally hear the album and what a marvellous album it is.

Curses makes an instant impression with dynamic first track and first single The Lord Hates a Coward and before you have a chance for a breath Plague of Onces tears straight in like a relentless behemoth of a song, it also contains the intriguing refrain “why put the body where the body don’t wanna go” which is delivered in such a gloriously bone chilling and fervent way that you can almost feel Falco’s pulsating jugular vein balloon out like a newly subscribed weight watcher’s arse on a step machine.

They’re never going to escape the mclusky references, despite the pleasing addition of synth in songs like Manchasm, but The Difference Between Future Of The Left And mclusky Is That FOLT Are On Fire, they just seem so much more focused and vital with their viciously catchy hooks. They certainly haven’t lost their wit either; lines such as “Colin was a pussy, a very pretty pussy cat” and songs like Fuck the Countryside Alliance are guaranteed to put a smile on even the most miserable Snow Patrol fan’s face.

The rather pleasant surprise of the album, which quietly emerges from the brutal onslaught of penultimate track adeadenemyalwayssmellsgood, is the almost balad-like closer The Contrarian which is both lovely and charming with its chiming piano chords. With the last softly sung line "I give you the future of what you demanded" the chords hang in the air like a worn out but hardy chandelier.
