Dark Captain: Dead Legs & Alibis
Dark Captain have lost a shade and a rank but the second album is a finer offering than the debut album by Dark Captain Light Captain in 2008. The woozily atmospheric folkatronic textures are still in place but so many other things now complement them, like the motorik Germanic rhythms that pulse constantly and the acid-folk stylings of Midlake. The first single ‘Submarines’ stands out still for its melancholic folk-pop feel and lovely harmonies but there are new lands on the horizon. ’80,000 Reasons’ is liberated and fast-paced psych-pop with baroque overlays, and a flash of anger that cuts through their usual ethereal writings - “you’ve got no fucking right/ to confuse/ lead me on” - while ‘Different & Easier’ with its tinkling piano and indiepop bounce could almost be a Belle & Sebastian song (admittedly one with an engine powered by Can).

Dan Carney’s vocals are whispery and non-committal, and still sound a little samey over a whole album, but they’re hitched to a stronger set of songs than those on Miracle Kicker. Grooves, floaty bits and full-on pop, there’s more variety in Dark Captain’s palette now, which makes for a much better record second time around.
