Darren Hayman & The Secondary Modern

The ever-active Darren Hayman is at it again. Not content with his January Songs project and the Vostok 5 music/ art collaboration this year (not to mention the new Ship's Piano record), he’s released 15 more songs linked to the Essex Arms albums, including demos and alternative versions. He’s well versed now in the suburban folk sound, hymning the poetry of the county of his birth, its people and its infrastructure, with simple arrangements to complement the yearning in his voice. ‘Sting and his Lute’ stands out for the title alone while ‘Beach Head’ is a skanking Hayman take on Augustus Pablo and there’s a surprise right at the end with ‘Young Love’, much covered over the last 55 years but probably best known by those of Darren’s age as a cheesey Donny Osmond single.

A bit like his Table At One (The Dessert Menu) offering a few years ago that dished up some tasty morsels following the Table At One album proper, the mid-priced Green and the Grey complements the Essex Arms album nicely, offering few essential extras but enough to confirm Darren’s depth of quality.
