Django Django

A couple of years ago Django Django performed at that most deadpan of festivals, End of the Road. There, amongst the boot gazing and earnest guitar picking folk balladry, was this quartet of Hawaian shirt and garland clad buffoons, playing a set floating somewhere between Kraftwerk, the Beach Boys, Dick Dale and Lemon Jelly. We looked on aghast. Why were they not sporting plaid? Had someone spiked their flagon of mead? What was this madness? Psychedelic surf funk? Electro garage? Funky krautrock? Or actually, all these things? An act who judging by their Facebook updates scour the most obscure cobweb coated reaches of musical history (well, Youtube anyway) to uncover their inspirations with the outcome that they’re able to be eclectic while ultimately sounding just like, well, Django Django, Anyway, they were brilliant that day, so this thirteen track long player has been eagerly awaited.

The frontman’s the drummer and this is probably reflected in their sound because his thumping percussion leads the way, joined by throbbing bass and buzzing electro riffs to create the metronomic rhythm that propels the songs. Melodies and choruses are few, and yet, it’s far from tedious. This is no self indulgent dronefest, as even without the crazy visuals of their live set, it still all sounds like one long party; a chugging conga or parpy samba with layers added like toppings to a pizza, to give you more variety than any lad on a moped could deliver and a heck of a lot more fun.
