Some samplers used to be 99p. Sub Pop’s compilations are £2.99. But Domino charge a full £5! For most people, the attraction will be the Arctic Monkeys’ version of 'Diamonds Are Forever', which is respectable enough but won’t have Dame Shirley pissing her diamante knickers in fear of losing her royalties any time soon. But there's a lot of good stuff from new or forthcoming albums: the Kills, Cass McCombs, Stephen Malkmus (sounding like he's been listening to Black Mountain) and Correcto, a new Glasgow band with that ace old Glasgow trick of sounding American. I'm still undecided whether 'Assembly' from Wild Beasts is more Antony Hegarty cool or Mika cheese but it hasn't stopped me listening repeatedly.
Domino have spunked some of the Arctic Monkeys' millions on (oh dear) The Steve Reid Ensemble who really belong on The Fast Show's Jazz Club and also on the utterly pretentious Lightspeed Champion. I don't dislike old Dev but his track here, ‘Midnight Surprise’, and his album generally, sound like some BRIT school student project: "write a melancholy song in the style of Conor Oberst; extra marks will be awarded for syrupy strings and celestial references". Best of all are Adem's version of the Breeders' 'Invisible Man', its tinkly charms promising much for the forthcoming album, and Von Sudenfed's ‘Slow Down Ronnie’ a sort of German techno Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club where Mark E Smith virtually collapses in laughter at one point. Not a bad old compilation for a fiver but probably no better than the ones that fall off the front of music magazines these days.
