Eddy Current Suppression Ring: Rush To Relax
The great thing about the second album from Melbourne’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring is that it’s influenced by American garage-rock but it’s delivered with an Australian accent, both vocally and musically. So while one keystone might be the Stooges and MC5, there’s also a link to bands like Radio Birdman and the Saints. And Melbourne music has often been pretty experimental for Oz (The Boys Next Door/ Birthday Party hailed from there) so it’s not exactly surprising that the last track should be 5 minutes of “tune” and 20 of soothing surf sounds. As with the Mexican Summer single, there’s another take on your Aussie male stereotype; ‘Gentleman’ lists all the things that the guy will do for his girl: “I try to be the first to apologise when we have a fight/ even if you’re wrong”. Enlightened!

There’s some great, primal garagey rock’n’roll here (‘I Got A Feeling’) and clattering punky pop (‘Walked Into A Corner’) and the album is summed up by the opening (and best) track ‘Anxiety’: full of riffs but not trying to smash you over the head with some quasi-metallic attack. It’s an impressive album of smarter than usual guitar rock and if you listen to the self-awareness displayed on ‘Burn’, you’ll never look at a Walkabout in the same way again.
