Emily Loizeau L’Autre Bout Du Monde
Fargo Records

Article written by Ged M
Mar 16, 2008.

If you were asked to name French singers, you might start with the ones who became famous in the 60s and 70s: Serge, France, Francoise, Brigitte, and the rest. It's been a bit hard to name anyone more recent, apart from Vanessa Paradis maybe, since language proves a particular barrier and French artists seem to be known here more for dance music (and killing actresses). But there seem to be more French singers around now though: people like Camille, Bertrand Burgalat and Emily Loizeau. Emily is a French singer-songwriter with a strong line alt.folk, which you might speculate comes from having an English mother and being influenced as much by Tom Waits as Jacques Brel.

Andrew Bird duets with her on ‘London Town’, switching between English and French, and the arrangements on a number of songs remind you of him and his orchestral folky style. Several songs could be French nursery rhymes (Emily has an easy facility with a little-girl-lost voice) until you learn that they are about erectile dysfunction (‘Boby Cheri’) and political commentary (‘Voila Pourquoi’, in which you learn that “un blaireau” is both a badger and a dork; take that Tony!). There’s plenty of humour that’s a bit lost if you’re not a French speaker but you don’t need a translator to understand her lovely and poignant ode to her dad, ‘I’m Alive’.
