Emma Pollock: The Law of Large Numbers
After chasing the pop on 4AD, Emma Pollock returns home to the label she co-founded with her excellent second solo record. Although the 4AD debut had its merits, it could have been by anyone; this one sounds like no-one but Emma Pollock. Anyone who loved the Delgados will hear warming echoes of the past here, without the record becoming mired in nostalgia. The elegiac ‘Letters to Strangers’ is a fine example of her art, writhing slowly with an intense sense of dislocation. The sense of melancholy in her voice, especially in that moment when everything else drops out and just leaves her to carry the tune, is as good a song as the Delgados ever produced. There’s much more to admire too: the way the twisty 'Hug The Harbour' spins off its melodic axis in dangerous ways; Emma’s compelling voice on the brooding 'Chemistry Will Find Me', which has now become as singular an instrument as Polly Jean Harvey’s; and the acuity of her lyrics (sample line: “how you gonna break my heart/ when you never even made my day?” from 'I Could Be A Saint'). The Law of Large Numbers makes up for any disappointment felt after her 4AD effort and keeps the best of the Delgados sound while being utterly contemporary.
