A Seattle band on Sub Pop (well in North america anyway, it's Bella Union here)? Bring on the wah wahs and set the amp to 11... it's time to rock!!! But hang on, these sons of the homeplace of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains seem no more likely to jump off a monitor stack than they are to play with shotguns. Where grunge fused hardcore punk and heavy rock under a cloud of distorted guitars, Fleet Foxes deliver a more gentle sound, one influenced by the west coast psychedelia of the 60s and early 70s and English chamber folk. Fittingly the lyrics avoid the angst ridden themes of Seattle's 90s bunch, frequently focusing instead on natural wonders; mountains, wildlife and countryside. It's often beautiful, with simple acoustic arrangements, carried along by the gorgeous vocals of Robin Pecknold and the soothing harmonies of his cohorts.
As an album it works perfectly, all eleven efforts delightfully wistful and tender, but if you must pick out a couple for your little gizmo then the aptly named baroque style White Winter Hymnal with its big percussion and superb four man acapella vocals, and the western themed Your Protector with its melancholic hook, are the two to throw your cash at. Better still, buy it in its enthralling entirety.
