Flipron - Firework Shoes
Flipron are a bafflingly well-kept secret. In a world where Jools Holland remains one of the main ways to get music on the telly and there are a couple of BBC radio stations feeding 40- and 50-something blokes stuff that reminds them of their past, they ought to be a shoo-in.

That sounds a bit like faint praise, but it’s not meant to be. Flipron are bloody marvellous - smart, tuneful purveyors of classic upbeat, verbose English pop with plenty of swagger and a dash of the cabaret and music hall. Firework Shoes picks up where Gravity Calling left off (four years ago –time flies) maintaining an impressive sheen to their unashamedly over-stuffed songwriting. That they consort with Neville Staple points to their 80s antecedents, but you might as well cite the Kinks or the Divine Comedy for all that it will help you nail their sound down (not a lot, but it does at least help tell you this isn’t indie-schmindie, this is proper pop songwriting).

Perhaps the problem is they’re making music that would be best appreciated by people who don’t take time to lift their noses out of their back catalogue. Who know what they’re missing even less than they care. But if their natural audience ain’t going to adopt them, there’s no reason someone else shouldn’t. Pop music like Flipron’s is timeless and could lift any heart.
