A lot has happened in the 11 years since Free Kitten’s Sentimental Education album but while the world’s moved on, Free Kitten haven’t. That’s disappointing to report since Kim Gordon, Julie Cafritz and Yoshimi are all members of seminal bands and their Free Kitten project was such a brilliant rejoinder to the standard template of boys in bands in the 90s. But Inherit sounds as if they baked up a bunch of songs in 1997 and only returned to them this year, scraped off a bit of mould (or, rather, stuck on a lot of fuzz) and put them on sale. There’s plenty of meandering, formless pseudo-psychedelia, especially the undercooked ‘Free Kitten on the Mountain’ and the dreadful spoken word element of the 11 minute ‘Monster Eye’, which bows under the weight of its pretension. The effects-laden ‘Surf’s Up’, with J Mascis on additional guitar is better, where the line “you can die in the summertime” sounds like a whispered threat. ‘Seasick’ plays with language in a funny way and ‘Bananas’ is best of all, a screamy, spiky Riot Girrl punk anthem. But even though there are some plus points, the sound is well past its sell by date.
