The Tyburn Jig

According to their press release, Ghostfire are Britain's premier steampunk band, apparently. Luckily wikipedia exists to inform the ignorant like me that steampunk "is a sub-genre of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s". Ok. Further research also informs me that musically there's not a lot that links the bands that label themselves steampunk beyond a shared interest in combining Victoriana and cybernetics, particularly in fashion.

So what do Ghostfire sound like? Well it's more folk than punk for starters; while there are moments that are almost cabaret-esq, the Levellers are the most obvious musical reference point, though the lyrics focus more on the downtrodden and wretched from England's murky ginnels of lore than anything too political. There's a clear aesthetic appeal to the band but I suspect it's live where they really prove their mettle (and metal, hyuk, hyuk) and this CD is probably a decent souvenir from a great night out.
