Glass Rock: Baby Baby Baby

The title toys with you, suggesting they’re quoting Noddy Holder’s introduction to Slade’s ‘Mama Weer All Crazee Now’. Sadly, no crazee-ness ensures. Glass Rock make a lysergic folk sound, wrapping up Van Morrison and Cat Power within their almost jazzy, off-kilter rhythms. Dichotomies abound: Detroit and New York battle out a troubled geography of origins and influences, juxtaposing Motown’s laidback soulfulness with Sonic Youth’s more anguished alt.rock, as the experimental tussles with the established. The friction thus created should generate excitement but it’s quite an uninspiring experience overall. Kathy Leisen’s voice is a fine instrument, and musos would commend Ryan Sawyer’s percussive chops, but it doesn’t strike many sparks. Of the songs to hear, ‘Please Please Please’ is a folky tune with delicate, crystalline guitar while ‘Another Beer’ is like the Go-Betweens given a witchy, psychedelic makeover and ‘Runaway’ excels with its Motown beat and spidery guitars but, for all its musicianship the songs generally noodle pleasantly but don’t engage.
