Album Review

Golden Void
Golden Void Thrill Jockey

Article written by Michael H - Nov 3, 2012

Golden Void are the kind of band that barely needs reviewing, one listen and you’re either with them or a bit of a fool, in all honesty. Like Goatsnake with Mitch Mitchell on drums, Golden Void are a sweaty behemoth of a rock band, all log sawing riffs, octopoid drumming, wobbly vocals, and, for the majority of the album, a deep commitment to loud-loud dynamics. However, there is light and shade: the psychedelic interlude of ‘Virtue’, the bluesy mid-section of ‘The Curve’, the laid-back and sleepy intro to ‘Jetsun Dolma’ and the organ drenched ‘Badlands’.

With a set of songs as strong as this, I would imagine they inspire devotion at their live shows. For me, the strongest tracks are the loud ones, and they are mighty. ‘Virtue’ is a rum-soaked thrash around a dark basement with an amazingly lithe funk beat, as useful for rug-cutting as moshing. ‘Badlands’ is frantically immediate; it crests several crashing waves of guitar crunch and desperate drum breaks before unleashing a demolishing solo. ‘The Curve’ is the pick of the bunch, an absolutely brilliant, unreconstructed slice of classic metal. It even finds room for a spot of Hendrixian blues wibbling.

‘The Curve’ exemplifies everything great about Golden Void. They channel the best of pre-punk 70s rock: psychedelia, blues, awesome face-melting musicianship and an open minded blend of noise and structure. Golden Void have delivered an exhilarating set of arse-kicking rock.
