Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday Sub Pop Records

Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday are a three-piece from Vermont who dedicate their debut to the “weirdos of Brattleboro”. It’s a little strange itself, owing a debt to the psych-pop of the Elephant 6 collective and sounding like a super poppy and overstimulated cartoon version of Apples In Stereo. While ‘Girls FM’ is happy-poppy with a super-catchy chorus, ‘Zit’ is a birthday party at risk of exploding after too many e-numbers, wailing in best pop-hardcore fashion: “now I wanna break shit, don’t wanna make shit”. The deceptively titled ‘Fun’ has a little more substance, a ballad of over-medicated youth that is a cry from the heart: “what went wrong/ I took the drugs/ can’t remember anything good”. But generally, this is good fun with weird twists, from the oddly rhythmic Panda Bear-like ‘Eyes Music’ to ‘Subliminal Message’, an askew ballad of unrequited longing that has twisty verses and a huge, fizzing chorus. They only formed a year ago so are still at that musical age when they’re extra cute rather than annoyingly offbeam.
