I Am Liberated Northern Round Square Records

Head Of Light Entertainment is Carl Green, one time leader of The Close-Ups. ‘I Am Liberated’ is a collection of 11 songs, primarily featuring him and his guitar and occasionally various other instruments and whatnot. There’s many adjectives which spring to mind to describe the songs; ‘wryly observed’ ‘caustic’ ‘ oddball’ and ‘quirky’. Unfortunately I cannot add anything positive to that list. Look, he can play his guitar well – it’s all arranged professionally - and there’s no doubt the lyrics are clever and interesting – Rick Astley, Agness Deyn and Lady Godiva’s horse all being referenced. But… well it just sounds like an old solo venture from that bloke out of Kingmaker. One that has only just seen the light of day, after being mothballed for 15 years or so. Clever wordplay, stripped–down production, the easy melodic option always being avoided… the ‘highly original’ approach. Hasn’t it been done to death by now? It strikes me that this kind of effort provides more pleasure to the creator than to those listening. Well, to this listener, anyway.
