Here We Go Magic: Pigeons
Luke Temple’s vocals initially sound so bloodless and laidback that I’m not sure how I’ll last the album, a feeling that seems to be confirmed when the opening track ‘Hibernation’ is so kooky and funky that I want to slap someone. Fortunately, the single ‘Collector’ follows, light and poppy and darting around on a Krautrock beat, and eventually Temple’s voice seems to grow into the songs. Those songs are built on surprising rhythms like ‘Old World United’ and the almost mathematical ‘Vegetable or Native’ that is sung in rounds, while they sound like a psych-lite version of the Flaming Lips on the floatier numbers. It’s generally quirky and it didn’t get its hooks into me despite a number of listens, but ‘Bottom Feeder’ stood out, a mildly psychedelic song that rejects trickery for melody and works all the better for it.
