Herpes: Symptome Und Beschwerden

“Do you have Herpes?” or “I’m looking for Herpes” might get you something you weren’t asking for in a record shop (probably a broken noise and a nasty rash, respectively) but, terrible name aside, the second album from the Berlin band (Symptoms and Ailments, in English) is rather superior post-punk that is well worth hearing. It mixes influences from the art-school essentials of Devo and Suicide (heard to best effect on the excellent opener ‘Das Allerletzte Zu Erst’) with the insistent driving rhythms of classic Fall (especially the grumbling bass and cleap, plinky keyboards of ‘Müde’). I’ve no idea what frontman Florian is singing about, but he has the sung-spoken delivery of Eddie Argos that makes you think he’s being arch and playful; that humour certainly comes through with a couple of Kraftwerk references, especially on ‘Rucksuck’. Berlin’s always had a reputation for producing music both rebellious and innovative and, language barrier notwithstanding, Herpes’ second coming is impressively in that tradition.
