Hexicon
The Blossom Sighs Haircut Records

Hexicon - The Blossom Sighs
London’s Hexicon started life back in 2004 as a “junkyard Beach Boys” outfit (their words). By the time we caught up with them, around 2007-2008, we were so impressed we put them on a show supporting Darren Hayman, who also liked what he saw in their ramshackle but charming performance and began naming them as one of his favourite new bands. Well, it’s now 2010 and the band, some of whom also turn out for Allo Darlin and Hayman, have delivered their long playing debut.

They retain some of the summery harmonies of old but also have very mild psychedelic leanings (think a super lo-fi Super Furry Animals), indiepop (God bless the glockenspiel!) and occasional forays into alt-country via steel guitar (especially the lovely closer Still Here). The fabulous bittersweet single Something Strange Beneath The Stars aside, with its mournful horns and jaunty rhythm, it’s a slow burning experience, with Collins’ falsetto often accompanied by the most simple of melodies. Indeed it may take a few listens, about ten in my case, to fully absorb its delicate joys but unlike real blossom there’s no chance of irritation to the sensory organs, least of all the ears.
