Hidden Cameras
Origin: Orphan Arts & Craft

Article written by Paul M - Feb 15, 2010

Hidden Cameras
Hidden Cameras
Four years after their fourth album and nine since their debut, Canadian pink baroque popsters Hidden Cameras have gone all sensible on us. Origin:Orphan is smut free. No longer can we titter at their robust campness and sexual deviancy (cover your ears, Miss Primm, but I do believe Mr Gibbs is singing about urolagnia!). The melodies remain remarkably similar to the Cameras of old – uplifting church folk – but the words will no longer have tabloid editors leading a moral crusade against decedent Canucks. Gibbs still sings of love but it’s largely muck free, coming from the heart and not just the lust filled loins. They’ve presumably grown up. It takes a while to get used to and words are frequently re-interpreted, testing to see if there’s another meaning, one that can allow you to tut and emit a “disgusting!” sotto voce. He’s sucking the poison from the wound? Is that rude? But no, nothing. In fact stripped of its filth, it all sounds a bit tame. Like the party animal you knew a decade ago who returns, divorced, broke and broken, they seem so much duller just because you know what they used to be like. Still I’d imagine Mr Gibbs’ cleaner is relieved even if we’re not…
