Hush Arbors
Hush Arbors Ecstatic Peace! Records

Hush Arbors: nu-psych-folk
Hush Arbors: nu-psych-folk
It starts in a blur of feedback ('Water') and ends in a psychedelic frenzy of fuzz, wails and distortion ('Water II'). This is Hush Arbors, the sort of Neil Young-meets-Bert Jansch blend that you listen to in a reverence of lysergic bliss. Hush Arbors is Keith Wood and sidekick Leon Dufficy, who are memorably joined on 'Follow Closely' by guitar magician Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance, with whom Wood also plays. Their sound is part howling psych-rock, part gentle acoustic folk, which 'Bless You' typifies: a guitar fest combining delicately picked acoustic guitar in the foreground and electric guitars writhing and spasming behind. Digesting the doomy lyrics takes time but musically the album has an immediate kick. There's no flouncing around like other folk-rockers, no interminable guitar solos; a song like 'Gone' is storming psych-folk with a full-on propulsive sound while the guitars operate as precisely as keyhole surgery on the very moreish 'Sand'. All told, it's a riot of guitars seen within a vivid acid dream, appealing to the 'heads' as well as those who'd never normally tolerate a twinkling Telecaster solo.
