I Was A King

This is just like guitar heaven, with strong wafts of ‘Freak Scene’-era Dinosaur Jr and classic Teenage Fanclub, plus a blast of My Bloody Valentine noisepop on ‘Golden Years’. If you close your eyes for a moment during ‘Norman Bleik’, you might think you’re hearing an outtake – though this is way too good for an outtake – from Grand Prix, that is until Anne Lise Frøkedal starts singing and the dynamic changes completely. And the very fine ‘Step Inside’ is the finest melodic guitar rock that Dinosaur Jr never played. Yet it’s not derivative; ‘Not Like This’ is full of snarling guitars and ‘Weighing Anchors’ adds controlled feedback to give it different texture, while ‘California’ has such a heavenly pop jangle they chopped it after 55 seconds because any more of it would just be indulgent, if not decadent. Recorded at Marlborough Farms by Daniel Smith and Ladybird Transistor’s Gary Olson (with Sufjan Stevens showing up), the debut from Norway’s Frode Strømstad and band acknowledge the things they love, then add their own spin. The result is a wonderfully satisfying indiepop record –using familiar instruments to create a fresh sound.
