Jeff Martin, the only constant in Idaho since they formed in 1992, now scores music for TV series, which makes a natural progression from the atmospheric slo-core music on these reissued records from 1997 and 1998. You can understand his career move as songs like ‘Apricots to Armagnac’ gradually unpeel and reveal their attractions while ‘Tensile’ is shot through with a sense of longing. There are reminders of their peers - bands like Low and Red House Painters – but the best track is ‘Only in the Desert’, which sounds more like Yo La Tengo, with its mumbly vocals and catchy glockenspiel-teased hooks. It has a spare elegance that spans the years between its release and now with ease.
