| Joan As Policewoman - To Survive |
She’s got a bit of history, this Joan ‘As Police Woman’ Wasser. Having sung with Anthony and the Johnsons, and Rufus Wainwright, and also having experienced the loss of her Partner – Jeff Buckley – in 1997, Joan’s got stories to tell. Her debut album, ‘Real Life’, announced her presence as a solo artist, and ‘To Survive’ aims to cement that.
‘Honor My Wishes’ kicks us off, a lilting, aching, almost Jazzy lament. This song shows off Joan’s vocal talents in no uncertain terms, as she drawls through lines like ‘Will we ever meet again? In the house where we started?’. Next, ‘Holiday’, is a somewhat sprightlier track, whereas ‘To Be Loved’ invokes comparisons with Rickie Lee Jones. And that’s a good thing. ‘To Be Lonely’ is a closing credits song if ever I’ve heard one. Confessional, accented and restrained, the remainder of ‘To Survive’ continues in a similar vein. ‘Start Of My Heart’ strikes me as a 08 version of something like ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’, if you get what I mean. ‘Hard White Wall’ and ‘Furious’ provoke a bit of toe-tappery, before the title track paints a melancholic picture via voice, piano and strings. ‘To America’ rounds things off in epic fashion, featuring Mr Wainwright himself. Initially, ‘To Survive’ reminded me a little too much of that idiot Alanis Morissette. But, after a few plays, this classy piece of New York smokey bar torchery finds its way into your soul. Quality.
