Kiara Elles: Slide Over
Kiara Elles’ album comes in a fantastic handmade sleeve, although someone’s mum is gonna be pretty pissed off that the animal print coat she put away in 1975 in the hope it would become fashionable again has been butchered for record sleeves! The Leeds band, originally named Chiara Ls after their frontwoman Chiara Luccini, have been around for ages but seem to have been developing at their own pace: just a single so far and now their debut album. The easiest way to describe it is post-punk-indie-dance, with a dose of Elastica-style pop. The pulsing guitars and insistent bass of the excellent ‘Odio’ make it the sort of song to propel the student masses onto an indie dancefloor while ‘The Bet’ layers guitars and synths to very catchy effect. It’s easy on the ear pop, which though neither novel nor deep is worth a listen (especially the tracks mentioned) for its sharpness and energy.
