Kid Koala
12 Bit Blues Ninja Tune

Article written by Michael H - Sep 10, 2012

kidkoala
Kid Koala is a is a hip hop carpenter. His music on previous albums, such as ‘Some of My Best Friends are DJs’ and ‘Carpal Tunnel Syndrome’ sounds bashed together from countless records. Unlike other sample, scratch and edit masters like DJ Shadow, Kid Koala leaves in the cracks and stumbles, bent nails and splinters extruding all over the place. It all resembles Merlin’s house in the ‘Sword in the Stone’, creaking and teetering and seemingly defying physics, but standing and functioning nonetheless.

Normally hoovering up a surreal and varied range of sources: audio dating instruction manuals, interviews with people explaining how to make punching sound effects with bags of wet sand, sneezing …chickens, into coughing and wheezing hip hop instrumentals with immense warmth and humour; Kid Koala's new album, ’12 Bit Blues’, diverges from this methodology slightly, the extreme vinyl-diversity has been pared down to a themed selection of Blues cuts. The best being ‘7 Bit Blues’, a primordial stomper, pounding relentlessly on until scratched into oblivion, reducing everything to bits within bits, tiny slices of sound.
