Album Review

L’Altra
Telepathic Saint Marie Records

Article written by Ged M - Jan 16, 2013

Lindsay Anderson and Joseph Desler Costa are apparently looking to their big inspirations for their indiepop, placing them somewhere between Fleetwood Mac and the Cocteau Twins. The Mac link we can hear in the melodies and romantic interplay between male and female voices but the Cocteaus aren’t easy to spot. Those gentle guitars, splashing pianos and subtle electronic backing are more reminiscent of Tunng. The baroque ‘Telepathic’, which flits between melancholia and big sweeping movements, and the imposing ‘Winter Loves Summer Sun’ stand out, along with the electro-noir ‘You Don’t Know’ and the balance of foreground acoustica and background electronica in the delicately pretty ‘Favourite Flavour’. But on this long deluxe edition, the songs mainly seem to pass in a dreamy haze, and an hour-plus later you’re left with a memory of a pleasantly woozy atmosphere but few distinct pleasures.
