Julian Barbagello is from south west France but has the heat of Sicily in his veins. This album collects his first two singles, and adds four new tracks. There’s a so-so cover of 'I’ve Just Seen A Face' but his best tracks are the self-penned ones. These are broody songs of longing but with a transgressive edge: the intimate, confessional 'Before I Die' lulls with its gentle Americana and shocks with its lyrics "I want to see you making love with someone else…I want to feel prostitute fingers on my body" while the melodic 'Lady Pornograph' has a soothing effect that contrasts with the title. He comes across as a storyteller of self, a blend of Elliott Smith and Richard Swift, though he might be a cousin of Pelle Carlberg on the basis of his one departure into indiepop here, stacking pa-pa-pa choruses and trumpet fanfares into 'Your Love Is Old-Fashioned'. He’s introspective and enigmatic but avoids singer-songwriter clichés to produce something intriguing and occasionally spellbinding.
