Lightning Bolt
Oblivion Hunter Load

Article written by Michael H - Oct 9, 2012

Lightning-Bolt-Oblivion-Hunter
Lightning Bolt can realistically lay claim to the title of most exciting rock band currently in existence. With sufficient volume, parts of their catalogue can induce hysteria; witness the youtube videos of their live performances for proof. They are a duo of frighteningly intense drum firepower and colossal bass riffs buried under tons of feedback and howling amp murk. On every release, the sound they create is overwhelming and demolishing in its power.

‘Oblivion Hunter’ is no different, Lightning Bolt’s sixth release reveals an undiminished commitment to blasting your ears off. ‘King Kandy’ has a riff seemingly sculpted out of collapsing mile-high stacks of bricks, a primordial cauldron of drumming and someone shouting for help in a nursery rhyme style from the bottom of a well. ‘Baron Wasteland’ sounds like a riot in a hammer factory. ‘Oblivion Balloon’ is a spiralling bass grind that eventually collapses into a series of mad digressions and sun-eclipsing metal breakdowns. As a final example, songs like ‘Salamander’ are the reason I’ve maintained a cultish devotion to this band since the release of the amazing ‘Wonderful Rainbow;’ it is adrenaline distilled, an explosion of furious maniac rhythm, the product of conjoined noise twins.

For the obliteration of mind and body, accept no substitutes; Lightning Bolt are the leading experts in their field.
